Mattress Topper Buying Guide

When a topper can meaningfully change comfort—and when replacing the mattress is the better move.

A topper changes the surface, not the foundation

Toppers can add cushioning, alter surface feel or modestly change pressure relief. They cannot repair a support core that has materially failed or make an unsuitable base compatible.

Choose by problem

If the bed feels too firm, a softer topper can add compliance. If the goal is more responsiveness, compare latex-like or faster-response materials. If heat is the concern, evaluate the actual topper construction rather than relying on cooling adjectives alone.

Check dimensions and sheet depth

Adding several inches changes total bed height, which can affect fitted-sheet compatibility and ease of getting in and out of bed.
