Mattress Guide by Sleeping Position
How side, back, stomach and combination sleepers can translate sleeping position into useful mattress criteria.
Sleeping position changes how your body loads the mattress
Your usual position affects where pressure concentrates and how much surface contouring feels comfortable. It is a useful starting point, but body weight, body shape, injuries, preferences and pillow height can all change the result.
Side sleepers
Side sleeping tends to concentrate load around the shoulder and hip. Many side sleepers therefore value enough surface compliance to avoid sharp pressure while still keeping the torso supported.
Back sleepers
Back sleepers often look for an even balance: enough contouring to support the natural shape of the body without excessive sinking through the midsection.
Stomach sleepers
Stomach sleepers often prefer a surface that limits deep midsection sink. A mattress that feels pleasantly plush to a side sleeper may feel less supportive in a stomach-sleeping position.
Combination sleepers
If you change positions frequently, ease of movement can matter alongside pressure relief. Consider how quickly the surface responds when you roll or reposition.
